Chapter 12

As I walked around town with a hot chocolate in a cardboard cup in my hand, I felt like a private investigator. Alex, Alex, wherefore art thou Alex…See? Even when I tried poetry I just ended up plagiarizing Shakespeare. He was probably turning in his grave. Or thy grave, whatever.

I crossed the road and walked along the pathway that ascended toward Leo’s restaurant. Though, it wasn’t technically his restaurant, we just called it his because we didn’t know the name of whoever owned the place. I walked past and peered inside, as discreetly as I could. Maybe Alex was having a meal, perhaps with his sister, taking her away from the house for a while.

I stopped for a moment as I caught sight of Leo through the gap between the counter and the kitchen. He wore a funny hat, and I bet Tamara would think he looked adorable. He moved about quickly, and I also had a sense that he liked to keep busy, to keep his mind off his Dad’s death. I wondered if Riley would ever reveal to him the truth about their father. Leo needed to get some relief from the trauma. But, it all depended on whether he believed the fact that Savannah had seen his father’s ghost. If Riley’s initial response was anything to go by, it wouldn’t go down well. Then again, if he knew that Riley now believed, now knew the truth, then maybe it would be easier to convince him.

Anyway, not my issue. Savannah and Riley needed to sort that one out. I looked back in front of me and started walking, but stopped again when someone rounded the corner in a run and it seemed like they were coming straight for me.

“Jordan.”

“Oh, hi!” He slowed down, and although his skin was dark brown, his cheeks had a slight reddish flush to them.

“Everything okay?”

“Yeah, I was just going for a run. Exercising. Why, did I look weird? I bet I looked weird. Some people just shouldn’t run, they look ridiculous. I’m one of them, aren’t I?”

I tried not to giggle. He was so funny, in a cute, awkward way.

“You looked fine, I didn’t know you ran, that’s all.”

“Started today. Which is probably why I looked weird.”

“I thought you were stuck at some family gathering for the over fifties?” I asked.

He smiled. “I was. But I left early, told them I had some homework to do. Which wasn’t a lie. I don’t lie, just so you know. I just decided to go for a run first, get fit and all that.” He put his hands to his hips and caught his breath. “Nice drink?”

I glanced at my cup. “Oh. Yeah. But it’s pretty much finished now.” I walked to a nearby trash can and chucked it in. “I might walk over to the harbor.” That was the only place I hadn’t looked for Alex.

“Oh, do you mind if I walk with you? I mean, jog, while you walk?”

“Sure, I wouldn’t mind the company.
