Tommy pulled up in the driveway and Anton could already see Gwen sitting on the stairs in front of their front door.

“What your mama doing over here this time of night, boss?”

“I don’t know. I hadn’t seen her since Thursday, but I’ma holla at you. Le’me see what’s going on with her.” He responded, giving Tommy dap then stepping out of the car and closing the door behind him.

Tommy backed out of the driveway and blew the horn as he drove down the street.

Anton walked up to Gwen. She was looking cold, and that seemed strange because it was hot and very humid.

“What’s up, Ma?” Anton asked. “What brings you over this way so late? It’s after midnight.” Gwen slowly lifted her head as the moonlight illuminated black eye on her face.

Anton instantly did a double take. “Damn, Ma, what happened to you?”

“You know how it is in the hole.” He grabbed her face, moving it from one side to the other, trying to get a better look. “You know niggas treat people like me any kind of way.” She nonchalantly grinned.

Anton didn’t think it was all that funny. “A nigga ain’t got no business putting his hands on a woman, let alone my mama!” He angrily yelled.

“Don’t trip about it son, because I damn sho’ ain’t. It was just one of them thangs, ya know.” She was still playing it cool, but clearly she was hurt and it bothered him. She even spoke softer than her usual tone and wasn’t really acting like herself.

He grew concerned. “How long have you been sitting out here?”

“I was out here ʼbout an hour then I walked to the store and back, so probably ʼbout two hours now. I had to go hustle up me a six pack.”

He shook his head. “Are you okay, Mama? You don’t seem yourself.”

“Yeah son, I’m okay. I’m just tired, that’s all.”

He shook his head at having to see his mama look like that. “You look tired.” he responded.

“I am. I just want to get out of the heat and lay in a nice cozy bed. I feel my body shutting down on me.”

Anton instantly began to worry, because she looked sick. She held her head down and began coughing, but drowned it with a big swallow of Natural Ice.

Anton frowned. “How long have you had that cough, Ma?”

“I don’t know, ʼbout three weeks, maybe.” She turned her beer back up and swallowed hard.

He wanted to invite her in, but knew that Scarlett would kill him if she ever found out. Plus, she’d just gotten a 46-inch big screen in their living room and he didn’t want his mama to see it. She might have thoughts later of breaking in and stealing it like she’d done in the past. Nevertheless, he felt very bad for her and wanted to somehow take care of her.

Gwen began coughing again. This time it was almost nonstop. Anton reached inside his pockets and pulled out the keys to Scarlett’s car. He knew
