MISTAKEN IDENTITY?

I flung myself back, trying to get away. And I crashed into Betty. We both struggled to stay on our feet.

The man’s chest heaved up and down as he sucked in breath after breath. His face was red and spotted with dirt. He swept back his long tangles of blond hair and mopped the sweat that ran off his forehead and the blond stubble on his cheeks.

He wore a loose-fitting white sweatshirt over baggy khaki pants. They were wrinkled and stained. Breathing hard, he stretched his arms above his head, a long stretch after being squeezed in the low shed.

Betty and I were frozen in surprise. I jumped as a burst of wind blew the shed door shut behind him.

“I . . . I . . . I . . .” His voice was hoarse from screaming. He raised his eyes to us and squinted, as if confused. He studied Betty for a long moment, then me.

“Billy?” he said finally. “Betty?” His voice was a harsh growl.

“You—you’re here?”

I opened my mouth to answer. But no sound came out. My heart was still pounding in my chest.

“How do you know our names?” Betty demanded. “Who are you?”

The man swallowed. He made a sour face. His throat must have been sore.

“Of course I know your names,” he said finally. “I’m your uncle Wendell.”
