CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

NADIA

We have been home for two days, and I still can’t wrap my head around what happened. Alex has been buried deep in discovering who tried to kill me. I get to visit my mother, but I’m always with two security guards when I leave the house, and it’s only to see my mother, who I have to keep lying to.

I’m back in my room, and I’m starting to feel claustrophobic. Eddie still won’t answer my calls, and I’m giving up on him ever talking to me again. I can’t go anywhere or even work. Alex has forbidden me to do anything. Even Sally is keeping her distance. When I move around the house, I’m shadowed. Right now, my life isn’t my own.

Since the attack in the hotel, Alex isn’t letting me out of his sight. His men are everywhere. I’ve seen Edmond and Jake, who had come to the hotel to dispose of the body, I assume. No Gardaí was involved. This life had its own laws and rules. Not what I was accustomed to.

I’ve changed into a white pair of jeans and a navy and white knitted sweater that Alex had gotten for me. Showering each morning gives me a chance to emotionally reset, or that’s what I tell myself, but I don’t think there’s a reset button big enough for all that has happened.

I’m ready to leave the room and open the door but stop only to find Alex standing there with a box in his hand. A large red ribbon sits on the top.

“Can I come in?” he asks.

I take a step back into the room. I’m not exactly going anywhere, only to take a walk through the house to get some space.

Alex enters and places the large box on the ground.

“What is it?” I ask.

He smiles and my heart thumps.

“Open it.” He puts his hands into his trousers pockets and waits.

“I don’t like surprises.” I’m staring at the box like it might hold a bomb.

He waits, and I finally kneel and take off the lid. I’m not sure what I’m expecting. Shoes, more clothes, something of that nature, but inside is a snow-white kitten with huge cartoonish blue eyes staring up at me. A pink collar around its neck has a small gold heart dangling from the center.

I glance back up at Alex, and he appears almost unsure. “I thought you might like some company.”

The little ball of fur starts to move, and I reach in and scoop out the kitten. It nestles into my chest and purrs.

“A kitten?” I say and rub the top of its tiny head with two fingers.

“That’s what they told me it was at the pet store.”

I narrow my eyes on him. “It’s lovely.”

I don’t know what to say.

“You don’t have to keep it. But if you do, you will have to name her.”

I rub the little fur ball, and she tries to grab my fingers. “I’ll keep her,” I say and hold up the kitten.

“I thought you might like to get out today.
