Chapter Nineteen

Sitting side-by-side on Laura’s life-coaching sofa, both Sophie and Jazz had reached the conclusion that this was the best option, or possibly the only option. They were too fresh in their relationship to seek real couples counselling, plus neither thought the £80 per session that a quick Google search had found would be money well spent. Yet both realised they needed help because the previous evening had been difficult to say the least, with neither knowing quite how to respond to the other. Sophie was angry that Jazz hadn’t stopped at her safe word but was more ashamed at how she’d responded, and Jazz was angry at Sophie’s response but even more upset that she’d misheard the safe word.

“You responded by biting her pussy?!” screeched Laura.

Jazz shook her head. “We want you to try your very best to be an independent, professional sounding board. To listen as we talk through our side of things and possibly mediate how we respond to each other so we can see things from each other’s point of view.”

Laura laughed. “You’d need a proper counsellor for that!”

“We’re asking for your help,” said Sophie.

“That’s easy! You’re bad for each other! You get back together at,” Laura tilted her head from side to side, “what was it? About eight thirty last night? And by ten you’re sexually assaulting each other!”

“It was a miscommunication,” said Jazz.

“No! The bit before the Silence of The Lambs snacking.”

Jazz frowned. “The sex?”

“Yes! That style of sex is just weird! You’re taking Sophie on a path she doesn’t want to go down.”

Sophie spoke up. “I wanted to try it.”

“You didn’t enjoy it!”

“I did, until the nipple clamp went too tight and I said my safe word.”

Jazz sighed. “It sounded like wait.”

“It was white.”

Laura lifted her hands to the pair of them. “I’m not sure which one of you used that magnet description about how you slam together when things are good and push apart when things are bad, but look at you now.” She nodded. “Jazz, you’re fixated by the grass in the garden, and Sophie you’re mesmerised by my grade one piano certificate on the wall. It’s like you’re literally repelling each other.”

“So help us,” pleaded Jazz, her attention back on Laura.

“Why? You clearly don’t work.”

“We do,” said Sophie, focusing on Jazz. “Everything’s just so highly charged with us.” She took hold of Jazz’s hand and smiled as their eyes met. “That’s our potion and our poison.”

“Aren’t potions and poisons the same thing?” asked Laura.

“No, a potion’s something that helps you and a poison’s something that, well,” Sophie laughed lightly, “poisons you.” She sighed. “I guess our passion and energy’s just crazy. Last night was crazy. I felt lost in this charge of intensity.”

“It’s like we get sucked into this other world, isn’t it?” continued Jazz. “Our connection’s like a raging fire and it’s nice to sit around a raging fire if you’re camping in the great outdoors, but it’s not nice when that raging fire gets out of control and burns down everything you care about.
