THE MORNING AFTER CLARI and Toby traveled north Rafe shuffled into his brother’s bedroom and flopped into one of the armchairs set by the windows. The thick cushion groaned under the sudden application of weight as it sank under him. His heels kicked at the carved tree trunk-like legs where they connected to the floor. His sigh was more of a disgruntled huff than anything else.

“Something vexes thee?” Rok asked, quoting Robin Hood, one of their favorite movies. It usually lightened Rafe’s mood, but not today.

“Why do they have to be gone so long?” he grumped in reply. “I can’t imagine what they have to do up there that’s so important that they’re going to be away for so long.”

Ahhhh... Rok thought to himself, subtly keeping his brother out of his head. Man I hope I never have it as bad as he does!

“Well, Clari made it perfectly clear she and Toby had work they had to do back up north. You know that. You also know she made it perfectly clear she was not going to stop working and let you take care of her like some ‘kept woman;’ she intends to pull her own weight in as much as she can. You picked yourself a right spunky mate, dear brother. Though, you wouldn’t have it any other way.”

“I don’t like having her where I can’t protect her,” he countered, knowing it sounded pathetic.

“Obviously, but you know as well as I do, if not better, that Clari can take care of herself. She’s no weak human. Even if she doesn’t have a handle on her magic yet, she'll get there. Plus, she took care of herself with Dean last year. She’s quite possibly as alpha as you are, Wolf or no Wolf. You have to give her credit where credit is due. Besides, it’s only two weeks, and they’ve promised to check in with us every day,” Rok replied, amused with being the voice of reason for the first time in many years.

“I know she’s strong. I know she’s capable. She’s stronger than she even knows. Hell, she’s even scared me once or twice. But that doesn’t mean I have to like it. My Wolf is restless. He won’t shut up, and I know he won’t stop until she’s home again. So, again, why do they have to be gone so long?”

Rok sighed. He felt bad for his brother, he did, but this was already getting ridiculous.

“Buck up, boyo. Her home is here, true. But her job is split between two places, at least for the time being, and you’re going to have to accept that we can’t always all be home together. She’s going to have to be gone sometimes, possibly for weeks if there’s business to attend to up there or a job on location. You know Toby’s involving her more and more. Besides, what about when we go on our next tour, hmmm? The album won’t take too much longer to finish, and soon after it’ll be time to get back in the limelight.
