THE BOOKS AND periodicals we want to look at are piling up on the table next to other people’s piles. One person is flipping through an enormous handmade book about development in the South of Market district, consisting of more than fifty years of newspaper articles that a local man collected and pasted onto pages between the front and back cover of a drawing pad. Another has a 1966 issue of Ebony Magazine open to an ethnographic account of “The Typical White Suburbanite.” And the library’s artist in residence is going through issues of an old magazine called Display World, looking for images of “men in suits…solving the world’s problems with their self-appointed power and prestige,” to use in her artist book.[*6] Inevitably, our piles get into conversations, and so do we. The bodybuilder in Physical Culture is talking to the men in suits, who are talking to the 1960s “slum clearance” in the newspaper articles, who are talking to the suburbanites.
