There was a freedom that came with being in wolf form that was unlike anything I’d ever known in my life. It was about surrendering to my animal instincts, shedding my human concerns and obligations to embrace the beast. All the animal cared about was hunting and mating.

It was the night of the full moon, and the pack was gathering in the woods on the Alpha’s land. It was a tradition to run and hunt together as a pack on this night every month. It strengthened our bond as a pack, made us into a solid unit.

This was riskier at the moment, with many humans in town still believing that there was a wild wolf attacking girls, and the Alpha had even considered cancelling the run, which would have been the first time that had ever been done since the tradition began over a hundred years ago.

He chose not to cancel, but everyone was ordered to be on the lookout for any signs of trouble. We were all in a clearing with the moon shining bright overhead.

Cooper and Ava, as our Alpha and Alpha Female, were standing before all of us. They stripped out of their clothes and shifted forms, the process happening almost instantly. The rest of us followed suit, but it took a little longer for us to shift. Alpha blood had certain advantages.

Once I was on all fours, I shook out my fur and stretched my limbs. Opening, my jaw wide, I let out a satisfied grunt as it popped. Changing forms always cause a little stiffness in my joints.

Once we were all in animal form - a bunch of wolves and one mountain lion - our Alphas tilted their heads back and howled up at the moon. We joined them in the exclamation, until we created a deafening harmony. Then, the Alphas simultaneously took off through the trees.

We may have been a group of nearly thirty-five, but when we moved to follow our leaders, it was as one. My wolf side took comfort in having the pack around us. They were family, which made them a part of me.

But I couldn’t help thinking that something was missing. Well, someone.

It had never really bothered me that I ran with no female wolf at my side, but things were different now. Alyssa should be with me. The bite I gave her earlier today should have marked her. It should have started the process of changing her into a wolf shifter.

As I worked my powerful legs hard to keep up with the rest of the pack, I promised myself that she would be here with me next month. Hopefully, she’d understand how important it was. I wasn’t sure how it worked for a human that was turned, whether or not she’d feel the same connection to the pack as a family, but I wanted her to be a part of this.

I moved with the others, weaving through the trees without slowing down. The night was quiet around us, small animals fleeing from the vibrations of our thundering paws.
