Chapter Twenty

“HOW LONG BEFORE WE can move in?” Randy asked Jake as he entered the alpha’s office and lowered himself to the chair across from the newly repaired mahogany desk.

“We need another day or two of reconnaissance before we attempt any rescue operation.” Jake took a sip of his coffee and settled back in his chair before continuing. “I want to make sure that we hit the lab when there’re the least number of guards on duty as possible. I realize how difficult the waiting is for you, but I won’t risk anymore men being captured.”

Randy clenched his fists, feeling impotent. He’d felt that way since he’d heard his brother’s mental call for help the day Cam had gotten himself captured. No matter how much he might want to, he couldn’t make a move without the alpha’s say so. Not that he could go anywhere before he knew where the doctor was holding his brother. That could be anywhere in as many as a dozen or more countries. And the alpha was holding that information close to his vest.

The other man didn’t want him going off halfcocked on a rescue mission alone again. He couldn’t say he blamed Jake, but he felt so helpless, so damned alone without his brother’s mocking voice and constant teasing. He missed his twin more than he would have been willing to admit a month ago. Now, he would admit it, would admit to loving his brother more than anyone other than perhaps Cassie, if it would only bring him home safe and alive.

His throat burned as he thought about his twin and how they’d done everything together before his capture. Well, almost everything. They’d never been apart for so long. Even their military assignments, their run-ins with their enemies hadn’t kept them apart this long. He’d always been there to rescue Cam from certain death, just as his brother had always been there for him. Right up until last month.

His heart squeezed at the thought. He needed his twin almost as much as he needed to eat, to drink, to breathe.

It had been nearly a month since Cam’s capture and he wanted his little brother back, damn it.

What would he tell his parents if he couldn’t get him back?

Hey, Mom and Dad, I hate to tell you this, but Cam got snatched on my watch, right under my fucking nose.

Well, he would never say fucking to his mother. She’d box his ears for that kind of language. Maybe he would say it after all. He deserved a good ear-boxing for allowing Cam to get away from him the way he had.

He sighed and waited for Jake to look up from the paper he was studying and continue whatever it was he’d been about to say when his phone rang.

“Give me a minute.” Jake held up his index finger and shook his head when Randy would have stood and left the room. “Yes, Sam?” Jake stared at Randy, making him even more uncomfortable than he’d been before.
