Chapter 9
After leaving beautiful, battered Marissa, Jared drove straight home. He could have definitely used a stiff drink right about now, but heâd entrusted his fatherâs care to Gus and he didnât want to put anyone else out more than necessary.
When he walked into the house, Gus had gestured toward Jaredâs sleeping father and gotten up quietly. He walked into the kitchen, motioning for Jared to follow him.
âIs everything okay?â Jared asked.
Gus flashed a wide smile. âI think he had a good time,â he said. âHeâs plumb wore out now. Howâs Marissa doing?â
âSheâs home. Though sheâs pretty banged up, she was really lucky. Her SUV is totaled, but she has no broken bones or serious injuries.â
âThank goodness for air bags,â Gus said. He grabbed his cowboy hat off the back of a chair and put it on. âI guess Iâll be heading on out now.â
âThank you so much for staying with him. I really appreciate it.â
Gus gave the sleeping J.J. a fond look. âNo problem. He and I go way back. I hate whatâs happening to him. If you need any kind of help again, just give me a call. Mildred and I can come over and visit with him anytime.â
âThatâs mighty kind of you.â Jared walked the older man to the door. âDrive safely now.â
Once Gus had driven away, Jared felt too restless to sit and watch TV. Pacing, he just could not get past the thought that Marissaâs accident might have been deliberate. And while he couldnât imagine Custer doing such a thing, the other man still hadnât made a single attempt to call and apologize for standing Jared up.
Marissa might not think she had any enemies, but clearly she must have made at least one. First, sheâd said she felt as if someone had been watching her. Then, her home had been broken into. A brick through the window. Threatening notes. And finally, a horrific car accident that could have seriously injured her or worse, ended her life.
If all of these had been caused by the same person, then Marissa didnât just have a stalker, she had a crazed psychopath after her. Rayna needed to figure out who this person was. Because Jared couldnât even imagine what kind of escalation would come after causing a major car accident.
Since it was still fairly early, he dialed Raynaâs cell. She picked up on the second ring.
âDonât you think youâre getting ahead of yourself?â Rayna asked, once heâd outlined his thoughts. âFirst off, we donât know for a fact that the accident was even related to all of the other stuff. It might have been a simple, unintentional hit-and-run.â
âBut why would someone do that?â Jared argued. âThey left without checking to make sure Marissa was all right.â
âIt happens. Most often, the other driver turns out to have been intoxicated. Or have warrants. They always have a reason for leaving the accident scene.â
Jared grimaced, even though Rayna couldnât see it. âStill, youâll investigate it right? Because on the off chance that
