Chapter Nine

Tessa

Bathed in the warmth of the fire, Tessa sat within its glow and hugged her knees. She hadn’t wanted to talk to Scott after Aaron left, so she went and gathered a bit of small wood to keep herself busy. She watched as Scott got the blaze roaring and then retreated into the tent.

She brought her wood to the edge of the campsite and stoked up the flames, putting up the kettle to boil water. She didn’t want to get too close to him, but she had to check on him. Despite his tough guy act, she was still worried about his concussion.

When she gingerly lifted the tent flap, she saw him stretched out inside with his eyes closed. His light eyelashes stroked his cheeks as he murmured in his sleep. She would have liked to check his forehead, but she didn’t want to be in close quarters with him.

She trusted him completely, but she didn’t trust herself.

Furthermore, she didn’t want Aaron to walk in on another incident. She felt terrible about it and once she parked herself by the fire, she found she didn’t even want to get up to make the tea.

The blue sky had been completely covered by thick, white clouds. It was streaked through with black and grey, a freezing wind slicing it across the ground. Leaves rattled as they were blown into huge, distorted shapes. She could feel ice on that wind.

Aaron was out there, all alone. Because of her.

Emotion welled in her, but she wasn’t ready to cry about anything, not yet. She was terribly confused.

Tessa didn’t want to hurt either of the men. She felt awful about Aaron walking up to the camp and seeing her kissing Scott. She was attracted to both men—shifters—and certainly didn’t want to hurt Aaron’s feelings. She had just gotten carried away, something about Scott being so warm and close… She’d let herself go.

She glanced toward the tent again. Scott showed absolutely no sign of waking up, and it was growing dark. The water had been bubbling for some time, so she carefully pulled it off the fire.

She shrugged her jacket around herself, looking up into the high ridge of the mountain that towered above. Shadows were stretching across the landscape, painting the night into the wilderness. The storm of emotion inside her churned with greater force than the thermals far above her head.

She had to talk to Aaron. She had to apologize. Whatever he was doing out there, he was feeling hurt. That was clear from the way he’d left the clearing. She couldn’t just sit here and wait for him to get back. What if he never did?

Realistically, she knew he had little chance of getting hurt out there. He could shift into one of the most dangerous and survivable creatures in the world. Still, her human boundaries persisted against this good sense. She needed to see him. She needed to look into his eyes, see his smile, and touch his hand.

She needed him to look at her and forgive her.
