Chapter 22

Ellie

“Turn her back.”

Aleron looms above me, red eyes swirling with dark energy. The fluttery edges of his wings brush against me. Their strange inky darkness is cold to the touch and strangely hypnotic.

“I don’t know how I did it,” I tell him, which is only somewhat a lie. I didn’t know that I could do it, but I know how: I got so angry and jealous that I wanted her to be stone. “And I’ve never turned one of the statues back before, I don’t know how.”

“Don’t bullshit me. You did it once, you can undo it. I saw those snakes, I saw you turn your powers on—if you don’t do it, it’s just because you don’t want to.”

I’m taken aback by the hardness to his voice, especially so soon after he was soft and warm with Mera.

Does he really dislike me that much?

If so, why did he stand up and vouch for me?

Why choose to be a member of my triumvirate if it’s not what he wants?

Carri’s words come back to me. ”Too bad what will happen to them once you’re gone.”

I have no idea what she meant by that. Will they get in trouble with the House if I die? Or does she just mean that the summoners will call their contracts in?

“I can try.” My eyes dart back and forth between him and the statue of Mera, which is now leaning precariously against empty air, clutching onto an invisible Aleron. “But what do I do? Just... look into her eyes and think about her not being stone anymore?”

There’s a cackle from an alcove near the dining hall doors. Carri is crouched on the ledge of an open window, leaning out towards the foggy sky. She’s looking at me like the cat that’s about to eat the canary, a distinctly predatory grin on her face.

“I’m glad Mera usurped me and cast me out.” Her grin stretches, her teeth slightly pointed, her eyes glimmering in the low light of the overhead chandeliers. “The pack will come back to me licking their wounds when they realize their Alpha is nothing but stone. Then I’ll come back for you, little weakling, and get my revenge.”

Before I can say anything—not that I think she really gives a shit what I have to say—she leaps out the window headfirst.

There’s no sound to follow her swan dive, no impact or crunch of bones. I can only assume she turned into a bird and flew away, if that’s something she’s capable of.

“Is that really true?” Meeting Aleron’s red gaze, I clear my throat. “Is Mera the leader of the Greymark House monsters now that she’s... beaten Carri, or whatever that was?”

“Knowing her, that’s exactly what she came topside to do.”

His voice hisses on the S sounds, red tongue pressing up against sharp fangs, pupils tiny black dots in a sea of fathomless red.

“And now all her hard work is ruined because of you. Because that—“ he motions towards the dining hall doors, which are cracked open to reveal the carnage, “will never end as long as there’s no Alpha to end it.
