Neither of us spoke as Nathan led me down the halls, past open-mouthed vampires who loudly whispered to each other as I passed. Stepping outside, I sucked in a deep breath of the cool air. I was relieved I hadn’t burst into irrational tears at Zyon’s abrupt dismissal.

The day was overcast, and a light drizzle fell around us. I didn’t mind. I loved these types of days. They were best spent cuddled under a fluffy blanket, with a cup of tea or hot chocolate, and a good book… or ten.

My brain cruelly created a cozy mental picture of Zyon snuggling me in front of his fireplace. Shoving the images to the back of my mind, I followed Nathan to a forest green SUV.

He opened the passenger door and bent at the waist in a flourishing bow. “Your chariot awaits, m’lady.”

I appreciated his efforts to cheer me up, but I couldn’t find the energy necessary to do more than lift the corner of my mouth. My heart was behaving as though my beloved fiancé of five years had just dumped me.

I’d met Zyon less than twenty-four hours ago, and I certainly had no business being this heartbroken over him. Heck, I needed to get out and date more if I was this insanely needy after one date. Toilet paper and partners were two things that should never be clingy.

Other than giving Nathan my address, the ride back to the city was quiet. He was considerate and left me alone to sort through the confusing mess that was my life. But as we neared my apartment, a torrent of words tumbled from my lips.

“He was so cold. I mean, he’s a vampire, so he’s always cold. I’m talking about his behavior, not his temperature. Ugh! You know what I mean! Zyon might as well have been made of ice! One minute he is offering to be my own personal monster, and the next, he’s dumping me on you because he can’t be bothered to see me home himself. He didn’t even say goodbye.”

“Zyon is my best friend, but yeah, he acted like a douche canoe,” Nathan agreed without hesitation.

I paused, squinting at him. “Aren’t best friends supposed to make excuses and cover for each other?”

Nathan shrugged. “Listen, I saw how he acted last night with you. I’ve never seen him smitten like that. Then today, he let the queen boss him around like he was five years old again. Zyon is anything but a pushover, but he stopped when she said stop and then let you leave because she told him to.”

Not sure where he was going with this, I remained silent.

Hands tightening around the steering wheel, Nathan continued. “We all walk a fine line around the queen, but Zyon doesn’t usually give in to her demands. And when he does, it’s never this fast or without a fight. What happened back there was freakishly weird.”

I liked knowing Zyon wasn’t a grandma’s boy, but that didn’t help me sort through what had happened to make him go from hot to cold in the blink of an eye.
