MAG

My sister and I used to poke fun at the pompous, elite Lyan girls who passed through our inn on their way back to the city. Often, they’d wear their soft silks, carefully arranged hair, and fine jewelry for breakfast in the tavern at the crack of dawn.

Andy and I wondered if they slept in their makeup or with their hair done. We couldn’t imagine the time it took to look that good because we never had that kind of time in the morning.

We also poked fun at their accents, but I often wished I were one of them, if only once, and I used to say it would happen for me when I married a rich aristocrat who’d then sweep me away to Lyan. And yet when such men asked for my hand in marriage, I would refuse, unable to bring myself to commit to any of them. Once a woman crosses into her twenties and stays single, people start asking questions. Both Andy and I are in the middle of our lives and unmarried, which is uncommon.

We each sought the love and long-term friendship of a single male, whereas most women get married out of obligation, by arrangement, or because of rape, then conception. Rarely do women have much choice in the matter. Which raises the question why our father never forced either of us into marriages or used us to form an alliance.

Maybe he didn’t care enough to bother.

Maybe he cared too much and hid us where nobody would find us.

Maybe I ought to stop thinking about the past and dare to glance out the window of our room at this inn. We booked a room at the top of the place where we ate, and it overlooks the square. The music on the streets is deafening. The parade showcases lights, colors, dancers, singers, circus animals, and even a giant fish tank filled with colorful schools of fish.

It’s all a bit much for me. I wring my hands, wondering how I’ll do tonight. I mean, I’ll be dining with the king. And so will Slei.

He’s sharpening the weapons he’ll wear tonight, although I’m sure weapons are prohibited inside the palace. If the fairy glamour holds, Slei could be a troll and nobody would be the wiser, so I guess weapons on his person are okay too.

I am going as me. No glamour. Granted, I don’t much look like me with all the fine silks piled one on top of the other in order to create the lavish black dress Slei purchased, no doubt with the coin he looted as he made his way to Lyan.

Slei joins me by the window, arms crossed over his chest, a mean look on his face while the people on the streets celebrate. I tuck an arm under his biceps. “I don’t think glamour can hide your bad mood.”

When Slei doesn’t answer, I look up at his profile. He’s a handsome savage male with sharp cheekbones and a long nose that curves slightly at the bridge, giving him even more of a masculine look.
