Jesus asked Peter, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you.” Why was Peter blessed? What was the fullness of the revelation that Peter had just received? Peter told Jesus, “You are the Christ. You are the Anointed One, the Messiah. You are the Savior and the authority to come.” Peter was saying, “Jesus, I recognize You as the one anointed and sent by God to be my King.”

That’s what the Jews were looking for when Jesus arrived on the scene. They were looking for a new leader anointed and appointed by God to be their king and lead them to political victory. That’s why they shouted, “Hosanna,” when Jesus made His triumphal entry into Jerusalem during His final week here on the earth. Hosanna means a king is coming.2 Peter had received a revelation of who Jesus really was and the authority He carried. This is why Jesus said, “You are blessed because My Father in heaven has revealed this to you.”

Now let’s look at Matthew 16:18. In this verse Jesus is basically telling Peter, “Upon this rock—upon the revelation you just had of My authority—I will build My church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. You just got the key to victory, Peter. You just got the understanding that I’ve come to restore the authority and dominion that was lost.”

Look at the next verse. Jesus said, “And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.” A kingdom is a realm or sphere in which one thing is dominant. It is a place where an authority or a king rules. Jesus said that once you get this revelation of His authority and get rightly submitted to His authority, He will give back to you the dominion power that was lost in the Garden of Eden. And once He gives you back that dominion power, the forces of hell shall no longer have any power over you.

Jesus was telling Peter, “I will build My church upon this revelation—the revelation of the kingdom and the restoration of dominion authority and the power that comes when you submit to My Lordship—and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

We have already learned that everything in the kingdom of heaven is about authority. Satan’s ultimate goal in the garden was to break the authority relationship between man and God. If he could break that relationship, he could rob man of the power of dominion. This is the same thing the enemy is ultimately after when he comes against us with insecurity and inferiority.

PERVERTED PERCEPTION

You may be wondering what made Eve willing to step out from under God’s authority in her life. How did Satan get her to violate the authority relationship she had with God? We have no idea how long Adam and Eve were in the garden before this temptation took place. We also have no idea how long the temptation went on.
