4) (C)

Begin by writing three equations. It would be helpful to use the first letter of each dog’s name as the variable, so that you can keep better track of what you’re doing.

R + B = 50

R + T = 40

B + T = 36

A system of three equations with three unknowns can be very time-consuming. You probably remember doing these in Algebra 2 and they could take a while (not to mention the fact that one “tiny” mistake in any of the steps caused the entire problem to become one big mess!). Instead, let’s try adding all three equations together. That gets you:

2R + 2B + 2T = 126

Dividing that equation by two yields:

R + B + T = 63

Since we know that Rocco and Trixie together weigh 40 pounds, we can rewrite the equation as

B + 40 = 63

Subtracting 40 from each side of the equation tells us that Boomer weighs 23 pounds.
