Corporal Ronald Harris, just before the patrol on which he was killed, January 1969.

2 SAS patrols continued until 14 February and on 21 February the squadron departed for Australia. Shortly before the last patrol was withdrawn the ammunition bays directly below the squadron area exploded. The squadron area was showered with white phosphorous and high explosive grenades and 20 pounder tank shells were seen cartwheeling along the road from Nadzab pad. As the incident occurred in the late afternoon many soldiers were caught in the showers or in various states of undress. Most of the patches of grass and bamboo around the area were set afire and an all out effort by the squadron members was required to avert total destruction. It was just as well that the troops were not required to take shelter because some of the squadron bunkers were filled up with masses of stereo equipment and other valuables ready for return to Australia.
