Blackburn Point Bridge is named after the Blackburn family, who moved to Osprey from Iowa. They came to take advantage of the Homestead Act of 1862 and claimed land running from South Creek to Blackburn Point Road. John and Belinda Blackburn arrived with two of their five children, and later, their son Benjamin Franklin Blackburn relocated to the area in 1884. Blackburn Point Bridge was the first one built on Casey Key by the Champion Bridge Company of Wilmington, Ohio. Large fenders protect the narrow bridge from the wide working barges that have to navigate on the Intracoastal Waterway. The bridge rotates at its center, dividing the waterway in half and making a narrow path for vessels to pass through it. In 1926, H.T. Campbell was hired as the first bridge tender for $50 a month. The job was 24 hours a day, and the bridge tender had to provide the oil for the lamps and bridge. (Courtesy of Connor Keane.)
