Chapter Fourteen

Ronan had been on one of the search teams far up the mountain and on the other side of town from where his cousins were found. When the call that they were alive, and a suspect was in custody had come through, it took a while for him to hike out of the woods and get back to town. He learned that Nattie and Jamie would be fine, physically at least, so instead of heading to the hospital with everyone else, he turned towards the police station.

Bobby’s SUV wasn’t in the lot, just Stevie’s pickup, so Ronan parked his truck and headed inside. He was still dressed for the woods with cargo pants tucked into sturdy hiking boots, a t-shirt under a long-sleeved cotton shirt left open to catch the breeze, and a hunting knife on his belt. He left the knife in the truck and rolled up his sleeves, but he didn’t want to take the time to go home and shower before doing what he needed to do.

Stevie Murphy sat behind the desk that acted as the reception area when Ronan stepped inside. The station was really one big room with a couple of rooms off either side and a door in back that led to the bathrooms and the two cells the town maintained.

“Bobby’s not here, Ronan. He’s up at the hospital, but he’ll be back soon,” Stevie told him. Stevie’s blonde hair, brown eyes, and tanned skin made him almost blend in with the khaki uniform he wore.

“I know where he is, Stevie. I just came in from looking up around Snow Hollow and need a bathroom. Mind?” Ronan gestured toward the back and Stevie shook his head.

“Naw, go on. Just don’t talk to the guy back there. He’s asked for a lawyer and we called down to Weaverville for one, so it’ll be about an hour more ‘fore he gets up here.”

“No problem,” Ronan replied and made his way past the four cluttered desks, stopped in the break room long enough to grab two bottles of water, then opened the door to the back area. To the right were the bathrooms, but to the left were the two cells. He took a good look at the man that had planned on killing Nattie and Jamie, then turned away from him.

“Hey, I could use one of those,” Hans said when he saw Ronan with the two bottles of water.

A whispered spell didn’t take long, and Ronan turned back to look at the man. “One of these?”

“Yeah. The water in the sink tastes bad. Please?” Hans asked.

Ronan shrugged and took a few steps closer, then stuck his arm through the bars and tossed the bottle towards the man. “What’re you here for?” he asked as he opened the other bottle and took a swallow.

“My uncle is my boss, and he told my brother and I to come do an easy job in this area. Was not easy.” Hans’ eyes darkened, and he opened the bottle then nearly drained it.
