Chapter Thirteen
Emma
I wake up before Christian. His arm is still around my waist, and I want to stay like this forever, but my bladder has other plans. I slowly lift Christianâs arm and sneak out from under the covers. I use the bathroom and then sneak downstairs to make coffee. I donât remember when we finally went to bed last night, but my body is wired to get up at seven every morning. I grab a coffee cup from the cabinet and set it on the counter. I hold a coffee filter, place it in the coffee pot, and add the coffee grounds. I hear vibrating somewhere in the house. I press the button to start the coffee pot and follow the vibrating. Itâs my phone.
âTwelve missed calls and twenty-three messages from my sister. I scroll through my messages and laugh at the last one. I hit dial and walk back to the kitchen.
ââJesus, please tell me youâre still alive?â She says into the phone.
ââObviously Iâm alive if Iâm calling you.â I answer.
ââYou never texted me last night. I wasnât sure if you were coming home or stay at your mystery manâs place. Then my mom brain kicked in and I thought horrible things. He is normal right?â I laugh.
ââDefine normal.â I joke.
ââEmma.â She says in her mom voice.
âHow do I tell my sister that the mystery man at the mall was Christian, and I spent all night fucking him. I sigh at the mess we have made for ourselves. Last night was amazing, but what will happen when everyone finds out?
ââItâs Christian.â I blurt out. She doesnât say anything on the other line.
ââClaire?â I say to make sure I didnât lose her call.
ââI heard you. What do you mean itâs Christian?â
ââMy mystery Santa is Christian.â I say.
ââShut up.â I pour my coffee into my coffee mug and open the fridge to add milk.
ââYou went on a date with Christian? The one and only Christian Reed?â I sigh and roll my eyes even though she canât see me.
ââDonât say it like that. It makes it worse than it already is.â
ââWas he really that bad?â She asks. I stir in my sugar and the images from last night play in my head.
ââNot at all.â I say without thinking.
ââYou fucked him?â
ââYou tricked me. Thatâs not fair.â I hear her laugh. I swear our parents lied to us and Claire is actually the older one.
ââWell damn. Looks like I know why my calls and texts went unanswered.â She goats.
ââStop it. This is bad.â I say.
ââIs it?â Claire retorts. I think about her words and want to believe that its okay that I fucked Christian. Then the thought of Cole finding out pops into my head.
ââWhat about Cole?â
ââWhat about him? Heâs all the way in Germany, and last I checked, you two werenât together anymore.â Sheâs right, but he is still my friend. I donât want to hurt him.
ââI know but how do you think he is going to react when he finds out I fucked his dad multiple times.
