Eyeing Ethan with concern, Cade stepped over beside his brother, slapping him on the back with a wide grin. “Dad said he told you to work things out with Sammy before you come out. Judging by the sour look on your face, I’d say you haven’t worked things out at all. Heck, you’ve had the same look all day, and I’m pretty sure the hands are about ready to quit. Well, except for maybe Hunter Andrews. I think he’s been nearly as grumpy as you have. Well, and Mr. Wayne isn’t likely to quit either. He's been around long enough, you really don’t phase him a whole lot. Anyway, you’ve really got to reign that temper in tomorrow. Better yet, sneak into your girl’s room tonight. That ought to give you an attitude adjustment.”

Stepping up onto the porch, and stopping at the backdoor to turn and look at his older brother, Ethan shook his head with irritation. “How would you feel if you found out the only reason Emma finally believed you were telling the truth about something, or like in my case, meant what you were asking, is because she overheard you talking to someone else? It makes me feel like she doesn’t trust me.”

“Yeah, Emma told me about the eavesdropping last night. She said she drug Sammy to the barn, so they could listen to what Anna Carver had to say to you.”

“See,” Ethan snorted. “They even intended to eavesdrop when they went out there. Not that it’s really the eavesdropping that’s truly got me so angry. I would have told her everything about that conversation. You know that.”

“So, let me get this straight,” Cade snorted. “You’re not really angry because of the eavesdropping, but because she finally understands you meant all those marriage proposals without asking you about what Miss Carver had been telling her.”

“It’s not that simple,” he growled. “The problem is I’ve got entirely too much to work through. Too much to be angry about.”

“No, you don’t,” Cade scoffed, shaking his head.

“What do you mean by that?” Ethan frowned, shaking his head. “She was eavesdropping to find out something I would have told her if she had just asked.”

“Did you actually have anything to hide?”

“Of course not,” he sighed. “You know that.”

“And she told you as soon as she had a chance to speak with you about it, judging by the timeline,” Cade continued. “So, she wasn’t trying to hide that she had heard our conversation with Miss Carver from you.”

“She didn’t tell me till this morning.”

“Maybe she preferred to have the conversation in private. And we got around to supper really late last night. She wouldn’t have had a chance between lunch and then. It was late enough, Emma and I only had sex once last night. Of course, it was while we were bathing, and it was pretty awesome. But she was pouting when I left the house this morning.”

Scowling, Ethan shook his head at his brother. “You were probably the one pouting. Besides, I’m sure you’ll make up for it tonight.
