Sam skidded to a halt in the doorway and watched Gracie sprint down the brick path toward the front gate. The hem of her dress bounced above her knees, giving him a good glimpse of her creamy thighs. “A devil in a blue dress. Why do I feel like I’ve been sideswiped? Christ, she’s twelve going on thirty-five.”

Chantel popped out of the leafy shadow on the corner of the porch and paused beside him. “It’s lavender. My favorite shade.”

Sam stared after Gracie, still feeling dazed. “Goes with her eyes.”

“Uh-huh. Yes, sir, Mr. Fontana. Our Gracie is one of a kind. The Lord done broke the mold after She made her.” Chantel glanced back at him over her shoulder, eyeing him from head to toe. “But I hope he didn’t break the mold after he made you. I hear you got some sweet kind of ass, Mr. Fontana, sir. And yours is spoken for.”

“Who’s paying you?”

Chantel slipped past him into the house. “Guess my break time is over. I’ll just put some fresh sheets on the bed.” Chantel paused behind him. He could feel her eyes on his backside. “And defrost some of that Yankee broil for your supper ‘cause Alice burned all Gracie’s clothes and she ain’t got nothin’ to wear but two of the finest dresses I’ve seen. So, I figure you ain’t got a chance.” Chantel’s shoes slapped against the wood floor as she made her way toward the kitchen, alternately humming and singing.

Sam absently picked up the melody as he watched Gracie disappear around the corner. By the time the second chorus rolled through his head, he realized he was singing Percy Sledge’s old hit song “When a Man Loves a Woman,” and he wondered why the words rolled off his tongue so easily when he thought of Gracie Calloway. Just like Percy, he was doomed.
