Chapter 21

The contractor supply store was busy with a bustling crowd. Jake expertly led Sally through the aisles to the appliances she needed. She realized from the price tags that his cost wasn’t even close to what the same items were in a regular store.

“Wow. With these prices, I can afford a stove, fridge, and a microwave. That’ll be really nice. We can have microwave popcorn and frozen burritos. Oh, it’s going to be glorious!” Sally clapped her hands together.

Jake stared at her for a moment. “Popcorn and frozen burritos excite you? You really are my mate. I eat them together a lot.”

“Me, too!” She beamed a huge smile. “We really do have a lot in common, don’t we?”

They purchased a refrigerator, stove, microwave, and a stand mixer. It wasn’t until they got to the cash register that there was a problem. “Sally, I have to pay. Your money is no good here because you aren’t a contractor.”

“Then I will pay you back for them. I don’t care what you say; I’m not letting you pay for all of this out of your pocket.”

Jake heaved a giant sigh. “Yeah, sure. You can pay me back. We’ll talk about it later.”

Feeling like she won an argument, Sally smiled and directed the employees pushing appliance carts out to Jake’s truck.

She’d just overseen the careful loading of each appliance when the two men in her life joined her. She smiled brightly and asked, “Who wants ice cream?”

Chase shifted his weight from one foot to the other and stared at the ground. When he finally looked up, he gave her a shy smile “Ice cream would be okay. You know, if you want some.”

Sally grinned and said, “Okay. We’ll make a quick stop at the grocery store and then we’re off to find some dessert.”

Sally was glowing with contentment when they arrived back at the farmhouse, still sipping their shakes. The sun shone brightly from its zenith, and they would soon have the ability to store and prepare food. Life looked better with each passing day.

“Chase and I will unload the appliances if you want to carry the groceries in. We’ll have these set up in no time.” Jake’s face was alive with happiness.

“That sounds like a deal to me.” Sally grabbed all of the grocery bags and lugged them into the house. She opened the door just as the guys reached it with the refrigerator. She held it wide, and they easily maneuvered the fridge into place. Jake plugged it in, and they repeated the process with the stove.

They found Sally happy dancing in the kitchen when they returned with the microwave and stand mixer. “I’ve never seen anyone so happy with kitchen appliances before,” Chase said as he set the mixer on the counter. “Do you just love to cook or something?”

She laughed. “I don’t mind it, but it’s not something I love to do. I’m just happy to be able to cook any time I want. We’re going to have a hot lunch today! Isn’t that exciting? I’ll even let you pick.
