File-4

Within 5 minute of replying to her email, Satsuki-kun calls me. Apparently the ex-fiancé and the parents of her former friend are reacting poorly to Yamaji-kun and Satsuki-kun. They’re violently angry, and even hurt Satsuki-kun.

“We learned a lot, though. Apparently my sister didn’t commit suicide, and it wasn’t a random attack. She was killed by someone with a grudge against her, someone who hated her.”

After I finish my work, and check my email, I still feel like I can hear her through the text on the screen. I send back, “you can talk to me whenever things get hard.” Through the phone, I can hear Satsuki-kun in tears.

“This happened when she was in high school. There’s a rumour that my sister drove a girl named Hitomi-san to suicide. I know that my sister would call her mean nicknames like ‘fatomi,’ but I thought they were good friends.”

It’s a common part of male friendships, but for teenage girls, nicknames are often cruel. In some cases, they specifically choose a nickname that’ll get to the person. Girls aren’t always sweet. Friendships between girls are more like a man and a woman in love. Sometimes they hurt each other on purpose to measure the depth of their feelings. So, as Satsuki-kun said, we don’t necessarily know if it was out of pure malice.

“At the funeral service, her parents hated my sister enough to throw incense sticks at her – but if they killed my sister, why now? At least, that’s what I thought. I’ve found that her parents still hate my sister, even now.”

“What do you think about them? Do you believe that Hiyori-san backed Hitomi-san into a corner, making her choose suicide?”

“I don’t know… but I think Hitomi-san was vulnerable and isolated at school. Enough for students in other grades to hear about it. My sister was a class committee member. She felt isolated in class and at school, so she was just trying to protect herself.” Satsuki-kun says in a tearful voice. Suddenly, she sighs. “…But, I don’t know if… her relationship with Hitomi-san was good.”

She sighs again, echoing through my phone receiver. When she takes a breath after, I can still hear a bit of her tearfulness in it.

“Still, Hitomi-san’s house was nearby, so she often came to hang out. You could hear the two of them laughing from her sister’s room. I… don’t think their relationship was dangerous.”

I don’t want to interrupt her story, so I only respond with short grunts to show I’m listening. I record what she says on a notepad, due to force of habit.

“But… maybe they had a secret relationship. Maybe they pretended to be good friends in private, but at school… She behaved horribly towards Hitomi-san…”

The complicated relationships between children are hard for me to understand as an adult. It’s like they have their own set of values and community. In the end, someone’s feelings can only be understood by the person themselves.

“What suicide method did Hitomi-san use? Do you know?”

“…After school she jumped out of the window of a classroom on the third floor.
