“My children.” A melodic voice rang through the sounds of our ship being torn apart, and abruptly, everything stilled. The ship stopped moving, Scylla's heads stopped snapping, and the writhing body of Charybdis froze.

Poseidon was the only thing that moved, and he turned, gazing over his shoulder.

I followed his look, and gasped.

Ceto was behind us, and she was easily as big as the two sea monsters. Her octopus half was low to the ocean floor, her tentacles on either side of the river, holding her colossal body above the glowing water.

Her human half somehow looked completely different than it did on dry land.

The blue light played over her red and black skin, and her black eyes were massive as she surveyed the scene. She looked fearsome and regal, rather than grotesque. I found myself wanting to bow to her.

“My children, you are being used.”

I held my breath, not daring to even whisper in the silence that had descended, lest our trip into Charybdis' gullet be resumed.

“Consuming the King is not on your list of tasks today. Pray, let us pass, and I will return you to your rightful positions.” Her black eyes moved briefly to Poseidon, then back to the monsters.

Slowly, ever so slowly, the other five heads of Scylla let go of Charybdis’ body. The ship shuddered beneath us, then stuttered forward, like a car struggling to start.

Poseidon turned to face the sea goddess as the water flashed red around us, and Charybdis vanished. I moved cautiously to the railings. He was back inside the whirlpool, which was whirling to life around his body.

“Why have you saved our lives?” Poseidon called to Ceto, still towering over us all.

A slow smile spread across her face. “A favor here and there can save one's own life,” she said. Her voice, so scratchy on land, was beautiful underwater.

Poseidon paused, then bowed his head. “Consider us in your debt,” he said.

She gave a low chuckle. “Oh, I do, Sea King.”

There was another flash of red, and then she was a third of the size, and hovering right beside our ship. Her voice rang out, but this time it was in my head. There is more at stake than you know, Sea King and his Queen. When I need the favor returning, I expect you to deliver.

Then she was gone, zooming toward the portal and vanishing into it.

A low, pained wail came from Scylla at the departure of his mistress.

“We should go, like, now,” I said, casting a glance at the six-headed beast.

Poseidon gripped the wheel. “Come on, Mossy. I know you've been injured, but it's not far.” The ship inched forward, but it was more of a limp than a sprint. Another wail came from Scylla.

“Air? Fancy giving us a jumpstart?” My whirlwind sprang to life beside me, then whooshed outside the shield. It vanished from view, and a second later, the ship began moving.

“Thanks, air!” I hollered, as we began to power toward the portal.

Questions were whirring through my adrenaline-fuelled brain as
