CHAPTER 13

Ryker had finally talked Susan into eating something. They had run to the store to grab some steaks for the grill. She loved riding on his motorcycle, which is how he bribed her to eat. After that she had gone to lay down while he fixed her front door. After making sure the chickens were in safely for the night he had rummaged in her shed for some tools. He was impressed with her stash. He figured most of them were her fathers’.

He noticed that some of the wood that framed the door was rotted from weather and knew it would need to be replaced but he at least made it easier for Susan to open it. Ryker still hadn’t talked to her about what had happened, where she had really been, but planned too soon. She was practically falling asleep during the meal so after she ate as much as she could he made her take a nap. She said no, that it was rude when she had a guest, but he just laughed telling her he wasn’t a guest then ushered her to the bed shutting the door. Minutes later he looked in on her and she was fast asleep.

Cleaning up the mess he grabbed the tools and headed back out to the shed to put them away. Once that was done, he checked on the chickens again then turned toward the house. Walking inside his eyes went to the bag that Lana had dropped off. Rummaging through the bag he started pulling out the bandages and other supplies setting it all out on the table. Just as he finished a terrified scream had him running toward the bedroom.

Ryker burst through the door ready to kill, his eyes scanned the room to find no one there, only Susan sitting straight up on the bed screaming in terror. Her eyes were wide open, but he knew she was lost in a nightmare she couldn’t wake up from. Rushing toward the bed he called her name, but she didn’t respond.

Carefully he grabbed her shoulders putting his face in line with hers. “Susan.” Ryker raised his voice. “It’s Ryker. Nothing is going to hurt you. Wake up!”

When that didn’t do the trick, he shook her trying to bring her back to him and out of the nightmarish hell she was stuck in. Shaking seemed to alert her to something. Suddenly she began fighting him, her small hands striking him in the face. He did his best to dodge the hits, but she was landing them like a pro. He felt her nails sink into his skin and knew the more he tried to hold her the harder she fought.

Suddenly she stopped, her head began moving back and forth, her eyes opened wide in fright. “No, please.” She whimpered. “I can’t. I won’t.”

It was at that moment he knew someone, or something was manipulating her dreams. Picking her up he rushed to the shower, stepped inside, and turned on the cold water.
