It would have been helpful if I had been prepared for the lonely-atthe-top syndrome, but I wasn’t. Leadership isolation is not something you generally read about in business books or college courses. Nobody prepares you for it. The loneliness that often comes with being a CEO may seem like a small price to pay for recognition, power, and success. But being isolated at the top can compromise your decision-making and leadership effectiveness. You need your senior team to push back when they disagree and challenge your thinking. Fortunately, I believe that I always made my team comfortable enough to challenge me and to share their views.

As I’ve since learned, every executive needs a sounding board who can act as an advisor and be trusted with confidential issues. This can be a group, or a retired mentor, or a coach, someone like a Tony Robbins. At this point in my career, I wasn’t sure where to turn. While I would reach out to Brian or Joe by phone from time to time, I thought I needed a larger peer group of business owners on my own level to talk to—and I needed friends. Any socializing on my part had most certainly fallen by the wayside during the turbulent time of building my business. I guess I had a one-track mind when it came to thinking about i9. I’d even lost all contact with my high school and college buddies, including the WiseGuys who had been so important to me.

Instead, I spent virtually all my time at either the office or at home with Nadine and the kids. I had no recreation, no hobbies, and very few outside activities, other than going to baseball games and family getaways to Disney. From an emotional standpoint, I was getting most of my connection through employees at the office, even though that really wasn’t working anymore. I was becoming more withdrawn and introverted.

But as so often happens for an entrepreneur, the rush of success had blocked out everything else.
