Sage started to get out of the car, but Garridan grabbed his arm. “Let me make sure it’s safe first.”

“Do you think the vampires that raped me are in there?” Sage asked. He could feel the panic rise in his chest.

Garridan growled and his eyes changed. “I hope they are. I’ll rip them apart.”

“No, Garridan, please. They could hurt you.” Sage went to grab him, but Garridan was already out of the car.

Sage scrambled after Garridan, fully expecting him to make his way into the house, but he didn’t. Instead, he stood in the driveway and sniffed the air.

“They aren’t here,” Garridan said a few seconds later.

“How can you tell?” Sage said and wrapped his arm around Garridan’s back so he could be as close to him as possible.

Garridan wrapped an arm around him. “I can’t smell them. Not even the faintest whiff of a scent, so if they were here, it’s been a very long time.”

“Oh, right. I never thought of that before,” Sage said. Using his sense of smell to detect danger was practical. He probably should have been doing that most of his life, but he had gotten complacent in Saint Lakes. Nothing bad had ever happened here. At least nothing bad until the kidnapping happened and now there were vampires running around that wanted to hurt them all.

“Why is that?”

Sage shrugged. “Saint Lakes has been at peace for a long time now.”

“I’ll talk to Ramsey about this when we get back home,” Garridan said.

“After this thing with the vampires goes away, I’d like to move back here. If that’s okay with you,” Sage said.

Garridan nodded and sniffed the air. “You can go in.”

When Sage entered his house, everything was exactly as he had left it. On the arm of the chair sat his folded, red and black checkered blanket. His pillow was beside it and a book he had been reading sat on the couch cushion beside that.

Garridan picked up his pillow and rubbed a hand over it.

“I’ve always had a hard time sleeping in the bedroom of this house,” Sage said, explaining why the pillow was on the couch in the first place.

“It smells like you. This whole place does.” Garridan looked around and put the pillow down. Sage watched him as he walked around the room. He went over to the built in bookshelf and pulled a book down. Opening it up and seemed to be studying it.

His place was just this little cabin across the street from North Lake. Three rooms made up his entire house. His kitchen and living room were one big room.

“You like to read,” Garridan said and leafed through some of the pages.

“Yeah. I’ve always been a reader. I prefer reading to watching television actually,” Sage said.

“That’s why you gave me the book?”

“Yeah. I thought it was a good way to get to know each other.”

Garridan turned to look at him. He gave him a strange look. “I didn’t give you a gift.”

“It’s fine.”

“No. It’s not. I don’t know what you like.
