Chapter 12

It was too late for cold feet. Candi tried to calm her nerves as she crossed the Virginia state line into Maryland. She was not worried about Amber Alerts, because she was not in her own vehicle. The rental car she was driving was not even in her name. She was silently thanking her mama for having daughters that looked alike. It was simple for her to swipe her sister’s driver’s license and credit card out of her purse while she was sleeping to rent the car. She knew she would be long gone before her sister found out about her theft.

A sly smile danced across her face as she checked her rearview mirror and laid eyes on a sleeping Yohaira. Candi still could not believe she had successfully managed to take her right from under Timbre and Marcus’ nose. Her patience had paid off where Jaslene’s had failed. She never planned on a true alliance with Kane, but she needed his resources. She needed a place to hide out. There was only one flaw in Candi’s plan, and that was the fact that everyone suspected Kane was behind the kidnapping and would be looking for him very soon.

“Daddy?” Yohaira’s small voice said from the back seat.

“We’re going to see your daddy,” Candi said in the sweetest tone that she could come up with.

“Where’s Mama Timbre?” Yohaira asked, instantly pissing Candi off.

“She’s not here. I’m a friend of hers. She told me to take you to your daddy,” Candi replied, trying to maintain her composure.

“I want Timbre and daddy,” Yohaira began to whimper.

“Just hush. We’re going to see your daddy,” Candi scolded as Yohaira continued to cry in the back seat.

Candi turned on the radio to drown out the little girl’s cries as she continued to coast northbound along the interstate. She knew that they would need to stop soon to use the restroom. She just needed to find a place that was not crowded and would not draw attention to themselves. Yohaira was proving to be smarter than the average kindergartener. As she passed the highway signs, an idea came to her that she knew no child could resist. With a new plan in mind, Candi turned down the radio to speak.

“So Yohaira,” she began, “how about we stop at McDonald’s and you can get whatever you like?”

“Okay,” Yohaira let out a small whimper.

“It will be fun, and then we will go to the hospital and see your daddy,” Candi smiled to herself as she got off at the next exit.

After they were fed and their bladders had been relieved, Candi continued their journey to New York. She only had about three hours left in her trip, so she hoped that Yohaira would stay sleep for the remainder of the drive. Candi turned on the radio once again to help pass time as she coasted down the highway. Hopefully, Marcus would take heed to her warning and leave Timbre so that they could be together, or he would never see his daughter again.
