Chart 11.8: Deportations from the U.S., 1892 – 2012

Even the most anti-immigrant politicians understand that deporting all undocumented workers is impossible without turning America into an even bigger police state. Enforcement at the Mexican border is increasingly costly, and yet it still hasn’t stopped the flow of unauthorized immigrants. Providing immigrants with a path to citizenship is the logical and humane course of action. And it would lead to increased wages and benefits for these workers, upholding standards for us all.

Those who are troubled by unauthorized immigration should look closely at the data in this chapter. If the goal is to reduce the flow of immigrants to the U.S., then we need our own government to contribute to better – not worse – conditions in Mexico and other Latin American countries. We need to end the War on Drugs here and neo-liberalism in developing nations. As long as the DEA acts as the number one profit booster for drug cartels, victims will flee across the border. As long as neo-liberalism enriches the few at the expense of the many, Latin Americans will flee poverty with or without documentation.
