Ridley

“This guy has not been here for a bit,” Rainey announces as she comes out of the bedroom. “Bed is made, coffee still on the counter.”

I glance into the World’s Best Boss mug. “Looks old,” I add, noting the dead fly and dark ring around the top. Anger flashes through me, and I swipe my hand, sending the damned mug into the wall. It shatters, and dark liquid rains down.

“What the hell, Ridley!” Rainey snaps.

“Where the fuck are they?”

“I don’t know, but breaking dishes won’t help.”

Elijah emerges from the hall. “Neighbors haven’t seen him since yesterday morning. They said they don’t think he came back last night because, typically, he stops in to help the woman get her husband out of his wheelchair and into bed, and he never showed up.”

“Guy seems to be a real fucking prince, doesn’t he?” I growl.

Ridley.

Rachel’s voice fills my head, and I pause, freezing in place, so afraid that if I take a break, it will sever whatever connection we’ve made.

Awareness spreads through my body as I inhale deeply, a putrid stench filling my lungs. It has nothing to do with the apartment around me, meaning it has to be what she’s sensing.

Please find me.

I’m fucking coming. I promise. I will the words back to her, not sure if she’ll ever get them or if I’m imagining everything I’m feeling right now. For all I know, it’s not even real, but it’s something to hold on to, and right now, that’s exactly what I need.

A flash of something runs through my mind,

A man in chains, bloody and bruised.

Another man kneeling, blade in hand. Body covered in sores.

“Ridley?”

“Not now,” I tell Rainey. A woman, dark hair, grinning from beside him. And then it fucking hits me. The images fade away. “Oh, fuck.” Fear envelopes me. “I know who has her,” I tell Rainey.

“I thought we’d already covered it’s the doctor.”

“No. He’s a captor too. She’s being held by a dark fae. Dark hair, dark eyes—”

She turns to Elijah, and he snarls. “I bet it is.”

“The same one as the succubus den?” I ask, and she nods in confirmation.

“I knew that bitch was going to come back to bite us.” She shakes her head angrily. “So how do we find her?”

“I don’t know. They could be anywhere. Here or in the Veil.”
