Chapter Six

Nico glanced down at the bed, his heart sinking at the condition his Rabbit was in. Paler than the white sheets under him, Alger seemed on the verge of death. What looked to be a million tubes and wires were attached to Alger’s body, and his breathing seemed too damn shallow.

When Chris and Mitchell, the leader of the feline coalition, came in, Nico only had one question for them,“Any luck finding the rest of Alger’s group?”

Mitchell shook his head. “I just put Shane and Tatum on the job, though. If anybody can track the group down, it’s those two.”

Alarm shot through Nico. “Did you make sure to tell them that this is a search and rescue, not one of the regular find and kill jobs?”

It was only after Mitchell scowled that Nico was reminded that it was their infirmary and medical staff taking care of the most important person in Nico’s life. Dipping his head, he said,“My apologies, Alpha.”

Mitchell, who looked like an older version of Cassie yet ten times meaner, smiled.“Forgiven, but only on one condition. We set up an apartment for you. Go shower and get a bite to eat. You haven’t left Alger’s side in days.”

Nico hedged. “But who will watch over him?” “I can,” a soft voice called.

Small and blond, the young shifter pushed through

the crowd until he was finally by Alger ’s side and took his hand.“Wow I can smell his scent on you. I never thought I would run across it again.”

Nico shook his head, wondering how the Eagle shifter knew about Alger.“When did you meet Alger?”

Riley gave a soft smile and gave Alger’s hand a gentle squeeze.“Let’s just say we know each other through a mutual friend.”

“Is it one of the members of the group he still hangs around with?” Nico demanded, hope rising in his chest.

“Probably, they were pretty tight.”

“You have to tell me everything you know about this mutual friend—please.”

That last word took a lot out of Nico, since he’d never been the type to beg. Before joining Chris’s pack, Nico had merely taken what he wanted and the hell with the rest of the world. Now, looking down at the innocence that still resonated from Alger, Nico for the first time realized just how much of an asshole he used to be. Alger might not realize it, but in the end it would be he who did the saving, not Nico.

Wrapping his arms around his chest, Riley gave a shudder.“We were both slaves at the same time. Since we were both bird shifters, our captors thought it would be ahoot…and yes, I know that’s a pun…to put both of us in large, gold versions of bird cages.”

“What was his name?” Mitchell prodded gently.

“He’s a Dove, and his name is Caley. It’s not going to be easy to talk him into coming back to Chris’s pack, either.”

Nico frowned.“Why is that?”

“Most of the Doves were killed off by a pack of feral Wolves. Caley watched his own parents being ripped apart.
