Ramiel returned several hours later, after a full moon had crept high into the sky. The moments had seemed to stretch into years while he was gone. Every tick of an invisible clock felt louder than the most explosive thunder. It had just gotten to the point where I had convinced myself that I was going to step out into the night myself to track him down, scared that a horde of demons had surrounded him. But then he’d stepped inside the hollowed-out building like nothing had happened.

I busied myself in the corner, brushing off the box, rearranging the scraps of wood as if that made any difference at all, chattering to the rat about Celestia. One thing was for certain, wherever I ended up, Mr. Whiskerson was going to be there with me. For now, I had to do whatever it took to keep my mind focused on anything other than Ramiel’s face. Despite my apparent busyness, I still heard him drop off packets of ramen noodles by the fire and bark out orders about cooking them up. Where he’d found the food in all this rubble, I couldn’t imagine, and I wasn’t about to ask.

But then a warmth invaded my private space. I swallowed hard, keeping my gaze focused on the scrappy little box. I knew who it was without looking. Every single one of the Fallen had a unique cloud that hovered around their bodies. An aura? I didn’t really know the word for it, but I could feel it all the same. Ramiel’s was full of depth and darkness, like coffee without any milk or sugar.

“We need to talk,” he simply said, not even bothering to mask his words from the others. The others who were most certainly listening in and watching our exchange. All the voices that had been drifting through the small space had suddenly stopped. The silence felt suffocating.

When I’d been a young angel, I’d had a knack for getting into trouble with authority figures. The nanny who looked after me at home. The trainers who taught me at the Academy. I was an excellent student, driven and passionate about the cause. But I was also pure trouble.

One time, I’d stayed late in the library to study for a particularly gruelling quiz on the History of Celestia, the most boring subject imaginable. War strategies, fighting skills, and that kind of thing? Well, I would have happily studied those twenty-four hours a day. The history thing was kind of lame though. I had no desire to memorize the family tree of every single Archangel. And that included my own damn family. There were far too many of us to keep track of.

But I’d stayed late because I knew I needed to ace the test anyway. The Order of the Seraphim expects all their Initiates to have received top marks in every class, even the ones that have no apparent real-life relevance.

The problem was, my arch-nemesis had also stayed late to study for the test. Or, at least, that was the excuse she gave.
