I sat upright in bed, my heart pounding harder than usual. The dream was already out of reach, and I almost yelled in frustration.
Almost.
The first couple of nights had been awkward as hell when Martha and Darrell had charged into my room, ready to attack whatever had made me scream. To make matters worse, Iâd worn a thin white shirt to bed that first night, and as usual, Iâd been drenched in sweat. To say poor Darrell got an eyeful wouldâve been an understatement. I was essentially topless.
After that, Iâd made sure to sleep in a colored shirt, which was a good thing, because Iâd woken up screaming the next two nights, too, and theyâd come rushing in. For the past four nights, Iâd held in my screams, though barely.
But the dreams were growing more intense. I had no clue how I knew because I couldnât remember them, but something churned deep inside me, causing my anguish during the dream to continue.
I climbed out of bed and put on a pair of dry clothes. I was so damn tired. When Cyrus had offered to train me, he hadnât been kidding. He was riding my ass, and not in the way I wanted.
Argh, the more I was around him, the dirtier my thoughts got. Damn him, his consideration, and his body.
Unhappily, I paced the bedroom, trying to walk off the ominous feeling. I glanced at the clock. It was one in the morning. If I went back to sleep, Iâd just have the dream again. It was getting to the point where I tried not to close my eyes.
After thirty minutes, I was climbing the walls. If I kept this up, Iâd disturb Martha and Darrell, and boy, I didnât want to do that again.
At this hour, Cyrus should be asleep. If I was quiet, maybe I could walk around the house a few times to calm myself. Besides, no one had come close to finding us here. The wolves patrolled constantly.
I turned on the television, putting the volume up enough to cover my sneaking out. I opened the window slowly. When I had raised it high enough, I slipped through more easily than I had last week. My shoulder and neck were fine now, and even with only a weekâs worth of training, I felt a difference in my strength. Cyrus had seemed surprised by how quickly I was picking things up, and heâd mentioned maybe he and I could start sparring in the next few days if I kept up my progress.
He was an excellent teacher. He pushed hard but knew when to ease up, which was usually around my meltdown point.
My feet touched the grass, and I paused, listening for any evidence that someone had heard me. When nothing out of the ordinary stood out, I jogged toward the tree line. I wouldnât be foolish enough to go into the woods, but I needed to get far away enough that I wouldnât bother anyone. Darrellâs house bordered the edge of the development, which bode well for me.
