The dust blowing around the Jeep feels like a storm sent to see me off. I thought for sure my dad would make an exception and let us in the fucking gates. I should have known better. I know he feels some attachment for me, but being adopted isn’t blood. And Commander Xin never breaks the rules. Ever.

My heart is breaking into a million pieces and my face is hot with shame. At least mom isn’t alive to witness this. My mom was one in a million. She raised me with more love than I ever deserved. My dad loved my mom and by extension, loved me. Ever since she was taken, a gulf has separated us. Now he and I are no more. Just like that.

“Captain, why didn’t you tell us?” Ace whispers.

“Please, don’t call me captain anymore, Ace. I never told anyone. I didn’t want people to treat me differently. And don’t say you wouldn’t have because I know the truth,” I say with a shaky voice. “Xin adopted me when I was eight. And now I am an orphan again. Fate is a fickle bitch,” I growl.

“You are not an orphan, zvezda moya. You are mated to us. You have a family in this car,” Kir says softly.

I look over to Kir, noticing his steel eyes have a wet sheen to them. He puts a hand on my shoulder and squeezes. The mate bond between us buzzes with his assurance, comforting me. It’s like a warm cloud settling over my tension, easing it away. I give him a weak smile and put my hand on his. Before I can say anything, three more hands pile on top of mine.

“You belong with us forever,” Zac adds.

Well, damn. What can you say back to that? A tear leaves my eyes as I turn my neck to face the guys behind me. They are all wearing matching grins. I blow a kiss and turn back to the road before the waterworks turn on.

“Where are we heading now?” I ask through my ugly crying.

Kir scrunches up his face before answering. “Our other option is my fathers. We have equipment to test your DNA and blood. I am still their son. I hope I can make them see reason. But first, we will have to complete our bond. We must go back to the man cave, as you say.”

“Well, I hope your fathers are better than mine. At least we know they will let us through the front door. Positive thoughts, right?” I smile.

“Whatever you say, boss,” Zac laughs.

We drive the rest of the way in a daze, looking out as the dusty city fades and green fields replace the brokenness. It’s like breathing after you have been underwater for so long that your lungs hurt. The first rush of air that’s like pure gold. Before long, we reach the gate, open and close it, and park in the old shed.

The guys jump out and walk ahead, leaving Kir and I alone. Kir walks over to my side of the Jeep and takes my hand as we walk.
