CHAPTER TEN

It was Agent Hoss's voice in Bailey's mind that led her through the preparations for the trek out of the Boundaryland.

Max protein per volume as she scrounged for provisions in Rowan's kitchen, helping herself to spiced strips of jerky and shelled walnuts. Fast-drying synthetic layers as she scrounged for a coat to replace her ripped parka, though that proved difficult since Rowan didn't appear to own anything other than natural fibers.

Bailey settled on a lightweight wool undershirt and fur-lined overcoat that were laughably oversized, hacking off the sleeves at the elbows with her multitool and wrapping one of his belts twice around her waist.

But even Agent Hoss would have been stymied by the giant boots she took from the floor of his closet. Packing the empty space in the shoe with socks didn't help much. They still flopped around like clown shoes. It was going to make hiking a challenge.

Bailey knew she looked ridiculous, but it wasn't like she'd be walking a runway in Milan. She had a long trek ahead of her to reach the border and another ten miles after that until she landed back in civilization. The only thing she had to worry about was survival.

You'll do better than survive. You'll make us proud.

Bailey froze in the middle of stuffing her supplies and provisions into a pack she'd found on one of the closet shelves. That wasn't Hoss' voice—it was her parents'.

It had been years since they'd made an appearance in her head. When Bailey started college, she decided she was too old to be imagining the voices of parents whom she'd never known or heard. At the time, it had seemed like weakness; now, she wasn't so sure.

Bailey closed her eyes and forced all thoughts of her past out of her mind.

Channeling Agent Hoss was the better idea to help her make the most pragmatic decisions. No woman could last as long as Hoss had in the dog-eat-dog bureaucracy of the beta government without focusing on the practical. Being tough as nails had ensured her career was so distinguished that she now led her own team.

Bailey would bet that Hoss never wondered what her parents thought of her decisions. And certainly not at a critical phase of a mission when her life was on the line.

It didn't matter what doubts Rowan had tried to stir in her mind. The more Bailey thought about what had gone on with the SALE convoy, the less she believed that Hoss had been the one to give the order to use deadly force.

Rowan didn't know the first thing about the ACD or about Hoss. Hoss had hand-picked Bailey for her team. She'd made a point of telling Bailey that she reminded her of a younger version of herself back at the firing range in Quantico, for God's sake, and entrusted her with a delicate undercover operation right out of the gate. There was no way a disciplined veteran of the agency would be willing to sacrifice one of her own agents.
