While Riley and Percy spoke, Rose moved to the side of the room where her Rami stood watching her with worry in their eyes. She offered Layla to Micah, who accepted the baby with a concerned frown.

“My arms are just a bit tired. It’s been a long day.”

Micah nodded, but they all still looked worried.

“I know you want to know what she said,” Rose whispered. “I want very much to tell you, and I will. I prefer to wait until we’re alone.”

“Of course,” Elijah agreed calmly, but Rose could see his worry increasing.

“It’s not bad. It’s just--shocking.”

“It’s all right, Rose,” Kavah said. “We understand, and we’ll wait until we’re alone, and until you’re ready.”

Rose saw that he meant it, and a quick look at Micah and Elijah told her that they agreed with him. “Thank you,” she said with obvious relief. Then she took a deep breath and blew it out. “I feel guilty that it never once occurred to me what it would be like for Riley and Percy if Layla was the Chosen.”

“You’re right,” Kavah said. “I feel guilty for that too, now that you mention it.”

Micah shook his head. “I think that, after Percy returned and told us he was to be Guardian to the Chosen, we should have realized that it could only have been Zia. I don’t believe Lehoia would’ve been so cruel as to separate them.”

“You’re right, she wouldn’t have done that,” Rose said just as Riley and her Rami approached.

“Rose,” Riley began, then paused, a little frown growing on her face. “Are you all right, Adelfi?”

“I’m fine. Just a bit tired is all.”

Riley nodded and let it go since there were so many people around, though she wasn’t convinced. “We’re planning on having dinner together later with Rikki and her family, and anyone else who wants to come. Would you like to join us?”

Rose looked at her Rami and they all nodded. “Yes, we would. What time?”

“I’m not sure yet,” Riley said. “A few hours probably since everyone had lunch a couple of hours ago.”

“Sounds good. Just let us know.”

Micah’s nose wrinkled. “We need to go change Layla.”

“Yes, we’re on our way to change Zia,” Riley said, then leaned over to kiss Rose’s cheek. “See you at dinner.”

Rose watched her sister leave, then turned to her Rami. “Shall we go?”

“Yes,” Elijah answered and placed one hand on Rose’s back to guide her toward the door. “What did Riley call you?”

Rose looked at him blankly. Elijah’s heart skipped a beat. Rose looked pale, tired, and despite her efforts, he could see the deep worry in her eyes.

“It sounded Greek,” he said, forcing himself to smile just a little.

“Oh, adelfi? Is that what you mean?” Elijah nodded. “It means sister.”

“Thank you. I like the sound of that word.”

“The word for brother is adelfós,” Rose told him. “If you want to use it.”

“Perhaps we will. For now, let’s get to our room before Micah passes out from holding his breath.”

Rose frowned.

“Our sweet little daughter isn’t smelling so sweet at the moment,” Elijah explained, then fell quiet.
