Chapter Nineteen

DUSK

“They’re taking her from us.” Sylas cornered Axel on the way from the dining hall. “And you’re doing nothing!”

Every night, after hours fighting, Sylas healed her in their dim squad room, yet Briar was worse than ever. Her atlan was fragile and dull. He worried he wouldn’t be enough to balance her for much longer. What would happen if her magic broke? If her alpha form surfaced? Even now, with her dinner tray in his fist, he was anxious not being at her side.

“I tried,” Axel snapped. “I can’t fight the order. You know they threatened Maddy and Greyson—”

“I don’t care about Maddy and Greyson!” Sylas hissed.

Axel had him by the shirt and shoved him back. “You need to get it together, Sy. This is beyond us, and if you fuck around with it, they will take more. It’s changing the entire Breach War. People like them don’t mess around. There is so much more they could do to us.”

“I’d take her away, fuck the amnesty, but she won’t… she won’t let me…” Sylas’s voice cracked.

“She’s going to survive this, she’s strong—” Axel began, but Sylas cut him off.

“No one gets to say that and use it as an excuse to watch her drown. Especially not you.”

“Especially not—?”

“She can’t stop. She made me take her to zone three yesterday to save one of the bone mages. She didn’t have to,” Sylas said. “Do you know why?”

Axel’s brow furrowed. “What are you on about?”

Sylas shoved him. “Because of you!”

Axel released him, his eyes dark. He opened his mouth to snap back, but Sylas wasn’t having it.

“She gets it, alright?” Sylas demanded. “We both get it. You were right. There’s nothing we can do to save you. But you won’t let her in, and it’s killing her. So she’s saving every single other fucking person here as if it might balance the scales somehow.”

“She’s got—”

“Me?” Sylas laughed, and there was something mad in it. “I’m literally everything she needs.” The vhik’s shadows burst into the surrounding room. “I should be.” When he spoke next, his voice was rough. “I’m not enough, Axel. Open your eyes. She needs you.”
