SOW THISTLE

Sonchus oleraceus

Out of all the edible weeds, sow thistle, or milk thistle as it is commonly referred to, seems the least likely to be eaten. Closely related to the dandelion – both members of the sunflower family – it has tall stems with clusters of small yellow flowers and glossy, easily bruised leaves that emit a milky sap when broken. Sap from any plant is usually an immediate turn-off, however sap from sow thistle has medicinal properties that have been utilised by Indigenous Australians for generations.
