Chapter Six

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Josephine murmured.

The house was dark, not a single light radiating from within. The only visible light—the lamp hanging beside the porch door—illuminated the path as she climbed creaky step after creaky step. With a simple spell directed at the lock, she slipped inside and frowned.

Darkness.

A groan swept through the house as if the structure breathed in and out slowly. Her feet prowled quietly, the carpet softening each footfall. Her fingers trailed across the railing as she ascended the stairs.

Tick, tick, tick.

The grandfather clock standing proudly against the wall attested to the stillness of the house, each tick like rolling thunder. She continued down the hallway and encountered a room with a partially open door. The hinges squeaked as she pushed it open, but the figure lying on the bed didn’t stir. Moonlight broke through the window and illuminated his face, his eyes closed and his chest rising up and down as he breathed slowly and deeply.

She rolled her eyes.

“Clarence!” she hissed into the darkness. “Clarence!”

He jolted awake and cried in fright when he found her standing over his bed.

“I knew it!” She laughed and pointed an accusatory finger at his chest. “You do have a grandpa bedtime.”

“What are you doing in my house at…” He rubbed his eyes and glanced at the clock on his nightstand. “Ten o’clock?”

Locating the closet on the opposite side of the room, she opened it and started rifling through the button-down shirts and dress pants on hangers. “Not expecting to have to wake you up, that’s what.” She flicked her hand toward the light on the ceiling and it flickered on with her magic, which allowed her to better see the contents of the closet.

“What are you doing?”

“Finding something for you to wear. I’m dragging you to a beach party, whether or not you are cooperative.” She frowned. “As much as I like how you look in your grandpa clothes… Do you have anything else? Like a swimsuit or at the very least, shorts.”

“I’m not wearing shorts in front of all those people. In fact, I’m not going at all.” The thunk behind her indicated that he’d swung himself out of the bed and retrieved his cane.

“There are many ways to make you cooperate, Clarence,” she threatened in a light tone. “Don’t force me to use one of them.” Her eyes lit up when she found a pair of light tan shorts hanging on the furthest end of the closet. “All right, I can work with this. Put these on and I’ll find you a shirt.”

Tap, tap, tap. His cane hit the floor with each step until he leaned against the closet frame with his arms folded across his chest. Her fingers paused their search, and her lungs struggled to find air as he gazed down at her with his piercing blue eyes. Oh, yes. She was completely smitten. But it was dangerous to fall for a mortal. Perhaps spending time with him wasn’t a good idea after all.
