CHAPTER 39
RIGGS
I glanced to my left while sitting at the stoplight. I smiled when I saw the sign for the candy shop Zoe and I had frequented often when we were kids. I remembered us each getting five bucks to spend. We would spend hours every week at the store.
The first few days were spent deciding what we were going to buy. We were both very methodical and wanted to make sure we got the most for our money. We would get right down to the money it cost per ounce. Then we would decide which flavors were worth the cost. It was a whole thing. Thankfully, the owner of the store was very patient. He never ran us out or complained when our parents would pick us up.
The light turned green and I slowly pulled away. I was tempted to run in and grab a bag of what was equivalent to Whoppers. Of course, it was a generic name in the bins, but it was the same. Zoe loved chocolate anything. She had a sweet tooth bigger than anyone I knew. She got just a little crazy when it came to her chocolate stash. No one dared steal one of her candies. She always knew exactly how much she had. She was a master detective when it came to ferreting out who stole one of her precious malt balls. It was always me, so it wasnât exactly hard, but I always tried to deny it.
The memory made me miss her more than I already did. We hadnât talked in days. No texts, nothing. I was giving her space. I hoped she would miss me enough to text me, but nothing. It made me wonder what she was doing and who she was doing it with.
Karson? It had to be Karson keeping her busy. Every day I didnât text her was another day she spent with her piece of shit ex. They were rebuilding their relationship and building me right out of her life.
When I got to the jobsite, I decided to text her. Sheâd be at school, which meant there would be no chance Karson would see my message.
Feel like eating some really unhealthy food while watching a movie in my theater room? We can watch the one about the boy and his monster who pees in the bullyâs apple juice.
It was about the lamest date invitation I had ever attempted, but it was Zoe. I knew what she liked. I doubted Karson was watching ridiculous movies with her. I would buy her a whole fucking bucket of malt balls. Whatever it took to make her happy.
She replied with a laughing emoji, followed by another text that dashed all my hopes for a good night with her. She couldnât come over because she had a date. I had to look down at my chest and make sure there wasnât an actual knife sticking out of it.
It wasnât like I could tell her I was bummed we couldnât hang out. She would assume I was disappointed there would be no sex.
