Drat that wretched woman Alaina. Where did she get such ridiculous stories anyhow? It sounded like lies the haute clique would spew. They could be the supposed “sources” in question.

“It’s a lie,” she bit out.

“Is it?”

“I hardly see what my sexual encounters with Vasilius have to do with the public.”

“Has the mating been consummated, Julianna? This is important. Or there could be an annulment.” Her father hacked into a kerchief and a flash of red appeared on the white cloth. He deftly closed a fist around it to hide any evidence, but Julianna had already seen it.

“I doubt there would be any annulment. Besides, you’re not feeling well. I refuse to have this conversation with you when you’re so unwell. It will only sap your remaining energy. Let me deal with my problems, Father.”

He sighed wearily. “I figured you’d say as much. This is a precarious situation, Juli. I hope that the author of this story moves on to bigger news, but I’m warning you, this could be the tip of the iceberg to much bigger problems for the family.”

She scoffed. “I hardly see what the problem is aside from people snooping where their noises oughtn’t be.”

“It’s far bigger than that. You are both from royal houses. Some of the oldest in existence. Many suitors shrugged off after I told them you were engaged to Vasilius. The last thing any of us needs is one of them requesting scientific assurance that you have in fact engaged in nuptials.”

“For the love of—!”

The door opened, interrupting the conversation. Vasilius strolled into the room, his hands tucked neatly into the pockets of his dark gray suit. The color rather flattered his dark complexion. Then again, Julianna did have an affinity for the color gray. Why did she have a feeling that if he knew that, he’d never wear gray again?

“Am I interrupting something?” Vasilius drawled lazily.

“No, no,” her father grumbled. “I was just leaving. Send for my servant, will you? I need help standing.”

Julianna moved to fetch the servant but stopped when Vasilius gently helped her father up himself. Warmth filled her. Vasilius bided his time patiently, completely at ease assisting her father. The scene was so moving, she clutched her heart.

Julianna said her goodbyes to her father and Vasilius closed the door to enclose them in the foyer alone. “What did he want?”

“To chat, but most of all he wanted to show me this evening’s paper. Have you seen it?”

Vasilius nodded, watching her with unnerving intensity.

She wanted to slap him for leaving her last night, to lash out for what he did—it hurt her. She had a feeling she cared far more for him than he did her, and that was an unsettling thought.

“I’m afraid I did. Not the best way to start off the day, I can say that much.”

She had to break her silence. She couldn’t ignore what had happened last night. She waited with bated breath, then let her question rip. “Are you never going to sleep with me then?”

Dark eyes watched her from a face clouded in mystery and aloofness.
