I broke out my new skill a month into the ’69 season. Against the Orioles, I bunted for two singles against Mike Cuellar. Brooks Robinson was their third baseman, so I was smart enough to drag both up the first-base line. Funny thing is, that’s not what made this game so memorable. I also hit the first—and only—inside-the-park home run of my career.

My breakout season as a bunter was 1971. In late July, I bunted for two hits against Stan Bahnsen of the Yankees, got another the next day, and another a few days later. The next month, I got three over two games against the White Sox. After 13 bunt hits this season, the element of surprise was gone—which was fine by me. Having defenses worry about this was my aim all long. Just like the Muhammad Ali–Bobby Fischer element of changing stances affected pitchers, the threat of dropping a bunt gave me a mental edge against infielders.
