Chapter Fourteen

Seven years later …

For the fifteenth time today I tried not to feel sorry for myself. When it rained bad luck, it seemed to pour. Having broken up with my fiancé less than twenty-four hours ago, I glanced at the pink slip in my hand, realizing I was now without a job.

Due to budget cuts in the district, we are eliminating classes and letting teachers go …

I taught in Seattle for three years, moving here after graduation and living with my sister and her husband. I then shared an apartment with Randal, but … now that the engagement was over … I assumed that was over as well. Staring out the window at the rain, I was too numb to even feel despondent.

“I got one too,” said a voice behind me.

I sat in the teacher’s break room at a table, having made a cup of coffee. “I’m sorry.” I knew it was my friend Jill, not even needing to look at her. “Just like that.”

“I’m gonna need more than a cup of coffee.” She sat next to me. “What are you going to do?”

“Don’t know.”

“You just broke up with Randal too. Talk about horrible timing. You must be … are you all right, Jane?”

“Peachy,” I muttered.

“What are your plans?”

I laughed, the sound slightly hysterical. “Throw myself into Lake Union, and hope for the best.” I was just joking, though. “I don’t know. I gotta get some boxes and a U-Haul. I’m moving, I guess.” I glanced at her. “What are you gonna do?”

“Find another job.”

“I can’t afford the apartment by myself. The only way we could do it was with two incomes.” I stared at the rain, the grey skies depressing. “Is it ever going to freaking stop raining? God, I’m so sick of it.”

“It’s supposed to clear up later.”

Glancing at my phone, the lunch hour was nearly over. “I have to get back to class.”

“Did they give you two weeks?”

“No. I have three days and a severance check.”

“I got two weeks.”

“Guess they liked you slightly more,” I said, sounding far too cynical. “I don’t care. I’m glad it’s three days. I’ll be so busy packing, I won’t have a second to think about how my life just totally imploded.”

“I’ve got to update my resume. I need to make some phone calls.”

“So do I.” Getting to my feet, I left the cup in the sink. “I’m sure I’ll see you later.” I smiled sympathetically, slightly grateful I wasn’t the only one who had to find another job, but I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. It did not feel all that great, my level of anxiety increasing. “Don’t stress too much. You have a hubby, at least. You have someone to go home to, a shoulder to cry on. I got … boxes.”

“I’m so sorry, Jane. That man’s an idiot. He doesn't deserve you.”

This situation reminded me of heartache long ago … when I had to say goodbye to Curt. It had been different, but the feeling was similar. “I’ll survive.
