Chapter Six – Catalyst

M

ax walked briskly through the airport, nervous and sweaty, headed toward gate number 11. His flight back to Chicago was leaving in fifteen minutes. He’d left his companion behind at the hotel in his haste. She was given money and a kiss and told to return home at her convenience. Max had told her that something urgent had come up and that he had to get back to Chicago quickly. Gate 11 seemed miles away and Max’s anxiety consumed him.

He had not heard back from Rose after leaving her numerous voice messages throughout the night. And now her phone was off. Max wondered if perhaps Rose was aware of his out of town rendezvous and was angry. He boarded the plane and sat there, starring out of the window hoping that he wasn’t too late. I hope she hasn’t left. Why would she cut her phone off? This is so fucked up, he thought. This was unlike her. She always returned his calls. Max ran through every scenario. What if she’s left for good? What does she know? Has Ashley told her anything?

“Hi sir. Would you like anything to drink or perhaps a snack?” the flight attendant asked. Max looked over at her. His mood quiet and melancholy.

“I would like a stiff drink. Something strong. Do you have Vodka?” he asked.

“Yes, we do. Will there be anything else? Breakfast will be served soon,” she said, wondering why the handsome gentleman was so despondent.

“No thanks. Just the drink,” he replied.

Max was gripped in fear and worry. He didn’t want to lose Rose and of all the worst-case scenario’s playing out in his mind, Ashley speaking to her was at the top. Max was sure that Ashley was cool and wouldn’t try to break them up. Ashley was Roses’ closest friend and he couldn’t imagine her doing anything to jeopardize that. But Max couldn’t contain himself. His fears were beginning to take hold. This was going to be a long flight home.
