Chapter 15

Jake

Tonight, might just be the most important night of my life. My reunion with Abbie didn’t exactly go to plan, so tonight sure as hell must. I don’t think I’ll ever forget the look on her face when she saw me at the restaurant. It completely crushed me. It was the same look she gave me all those years ago. The one that gave me a glimpse inside at all the pieces of her broken heart.

When I left her standing there in the pouring rain looking more beautiful than she ever has, I thought I had blown my chance. I had paced my hotel room for hours wondering if she would come and how to make things right. I eventually gave up and fell asleep on the bed only to wake and find her standing there. I wasn’t convinced I was actually awake to start with.

The important thing is Abbie knows what happened now, and she’s prepared to give me another chance. Tonight has to be perfect. My biggest problem is how to achieve the perfect date when I get recognised wherever I go. Abbie doesn’t need all that on our first date. I want to be able to give us time and space to talk without all the cameras and pressure. That’s a lot for anyone to deal with.

I take my phone out and dial Harry’s number. He answers after a few short rings.

“Jake, how’s it hanging my friend?” I laugh at his ridiculous greeting. How is this man a lawyer?

“I have big news, Harry. I fucking found her!” I know I’m grinning like a lovesick idiot. Luckily, I’m calling from my hotel room so no one can see me.

“Well fuck me, it actually worked! How many nights did you have to eat at the same restaurant?”

“Five. It was worth every God damn pizza just to see her again.” We both laugh at the ridiculous situation I find myself in.

“And? Come on man, spill! How did she react?”

“She panicked and ran at first. There was a lot of yelling at each other in the rain.”

“Damn, sounds like the start of a great porno.” Harry interrupts.

“Shut up man, it wasn’t like that. She calmed down and came back to my hotel in the middle of the night.” I’m trying to give him the edited highlights, but the damn joker keeps interrupting me.

“Definitely steering into porno territory now.” He laughs down the phone.

“Fuck off Harry, this is serious. I’m going to do it right this time, no fuck ups.”

“I’m only messing with you. Seriously bro, I’m happy for you. I’m glad it’s all working out. It does beg the question though, why you’re on the phone to me and not locking lips with your lady right now?”

“I need your help with tonight. I need to take Abbie somewhere on a date where we won’t become tomorrow’s front-page headline.” I’m hoping Harry has some ideas up his sleeve because it’s been so long since I’ve been home and a lot has changed.
