Culture, Recruiting, and Retention

Being ready for a recession means creating a strong culture, recruiting the right people—and having systems to retain them.

Nothing is more important than having the right people on your team. After all, they’re the ones who are most in contact with your clients and vendors. They’re like the tires on a car: they’re where the rubber meets the road.

Fun fact: did you know that NASCAR tires don’t have any tread on them? They’re completely smooth. They’re designed that way to get more surface-area contact with the track, which gives better traction. The tires actually become so hot that they melt slightly and get a little sticky, which creates even more traction.

This is a good way to think about building your team: you want your people to be “sticky” in their dealings with clients and vendors by instilling a service-driven relationship culture. If you don’t have the right people, you can’t build a strong culture—and you certainly can’t 10X your business in a recession.

Like NASCAR tires, the stickier you and your team are with your clients, the more traction you’ll experience.
