It is not necessary to have regular core plugs for this experiment. Rock samples of any shape or even drilling cuttings can be used. It is a common practice to use plug trim end for the experiment.

Mercury is non-wetting to all known reservoir rock materials and under high pressure it can access the smallest pores. Consequently, the experiment is excellent to study pore size distribution.

The method has the following disadvantages:1.

Mercury is not a reservoir fluid. The method is not expected to replicate the displacement process in the reservoir. Mercury injection capillary pressure is not recommended to be used for determining initial saturation distribution.
