After what happened in the recording studio between Max and me, I panicked and took the first available flight home. I’m a coward to run from Max the way I did. I know I am, but I feel like I’m swimming out in deep water too far from shore. I have no business getting involved in the deal he’s working on; I should keep my opinions to myself.

He’s a grown ass man and can make his own decisions. He’s no fool, he’s already figured out what’s going on and has moved to protect himself with a new contract.

Confusion clouds my judgment, and I can’t trust my feelings. My head says one thing, and my body… fuck. The way he made me feel was out of this world. My heart and soul were in tune with the universe when he got me off in the sound booth. Max Steele is incredible on so many levels.

My heart sinks to the pit of my stomach when I think of him. I disappeared with no explanation, leaving him literally in the dark, packing up while I ran out the door like a bat outta hell.

Okay, I admit, I am a lot of things. Not all of them good, but at the very least, I am a professional. In the three days since I’ve been gone, Max has emailed, messaged, and called at all hours of the day and night.

Some messages are work-related; others are not. I answer his work queries via email or SMS, but I don’t return his calls. I don’t even listen to the messages, in case the sound of his voice makes me shatter. I can’t bear to think of it, much less hear it.

After the weekend with my family, I’ll return to Toronto, tie off any loose ends, and resign. I’ll find another part-time job, finish college, and after that, who knows?

The afternoon of my sister’s big party finally arrives, and I’m grateful for the distraction. I’ve collected my formal dress from the dry cleaners, but Riley still won’t tell me why I have to wear it. It’s not the most comfortable dress, but hey, whatever, I’m grateful for the distraction. I’ll be offline once I leave the house, so I check Max’s emails one last time. It’s unlikely there’s anything urgent, but it won’t hurt to check.

I haven’t heard from him all day. It’s weird to go this many hours without a beep or a ping, and I wonder why he’s gone dark. It’s Saturday; maybe he’s seeing friends?

Ha, what are you talking about? Max doesn’t like people.

He’s more likely to be sitting in a dark room smashing the shit out of an electric drumkit than talking to a human. Then again, who knows with him? He’s full of surprises.

I log onto Max’s account and scroll through a few insignificant items until a message with high alert status zips into the inbox. Marked urgent, I click it open, and for a moment, I’m not sure why a New York doctor is urgently contacting Max with tickets for a “Concerta.
