Chapter 7

Let’s Talk

Tasha and Vincent

When they arrived home, Maria was drawing her bath. She knew that Vincent must have warned her that they were enroute, but for the life of her, she couldn’t figure out when. He showered and checked his messages while Tasha soaked in the tub. By the time she finished, he was waiting in the bed. “Come here, beautiful. Let’s talk.”

“Wow, I’m surprised. I expected you to be working.”

“I have taken the remainder of this week and all of next week off to help you with things.”

“Vincent!”

“I see the fatigue in your eyes. We can’t have that. You are surrounded by people who get paid to help you with any task.”

“I know, but…” she started to explain.

“No buts. I will spend the next week teaching you to delegate and relax. The staff is very capable. How is Monica doing?

Tasha was certain that Vincent knew the answer to the question, but she answered anyway. “Very well, actually. She prepares a daily event log for me, so I’m aware of anything that happens. She is pleasant and professional. I like her a lot.”

Vincent smiled at that. “You like everybody.”

“You have put together an excellent team, Mr. Johnson.”

“I’m still working on the most important member, Mrs. Johnson.”

“Speaking of that, let’s really talk,” Tasha looked Vincent in the eyes.

He could see the fire in her eyes and it scared him, “About what?”

“Not what….,” Tasha shook her head, “Who?”

“Ashley,” Vincent answered.

“Yes, Ashley. Please tell me what she said was not true – that it was just the ranting of a deranged, mourning, shocked woman,” Tasha begged.

Vincent dropped his head. For the first time since he had met Tasha, he could not bear to look into her eyes.

“Look at me, VJ.” It was a mere whisper. Vincent raised his eyes, but did not say a word. He wanted to make love to her, but he dared not touch her. He wanted to tell her with his body that she was the only woman in his life. He wanted to communicate with her in every way possible. He wanted to enter her intellectual realm and command her emotions, so she would have no choice but to forgive his transgression. However, Vincent did not utter a word or move a muscle. “Your silence speaks volumes, Mr. Johnson. Understand this. I will not be your main woman. I will be your only woman or I will not be your woman at all. Out of respect for you, I waited until we were alone. I wanted to go the fuck off, but I knew that would have gotten us both shot. This right here is the calm before the storm; the warning before destruction. If ever I have reason to suspect I am not the only one in your life, I will go on with my life without you. Understood?”

Vincent saw a flash of Lucille in Tasha. He thanked God for second chances and said, “Yes, Mrs. Johnson.”

“Very well. So, what are we doing tomorrow?” Tasha asked. Just like that, she was finished with the conversation.
